Anna Slobodnyak graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering and completed a major in Music. While at Pitt, she enjoyed playing with PBQ Hornist Michael Buckstein in the Kappa Kappa Psi Brass Quintet, Kappa Kappa Psi Wind Quintet, and Kappa Kappa Psi Trumpet Ensemble.
An electrical engineer at our friendly local electric utility by day, Anna is thankful for the opportunity that PBQ has given her to exercise her passion of creating beautiful music with friends.
Matthew Heffner is a trumpet player for the Plum Brass Quintet. He is currently a student at The Pennsylvania State University where he was a member of the Marching Blue Band along with other concert and chamber music groups. He is also a proud member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.
Michael Buckstein is the founder and Executive Director of the Plum Brass Quintet. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, at which he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology. He currently attends the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he is pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Music Education, as well as a Pennsylvania Teaching Certification.
Michael is very passionate about chamber music, and has performed with a multitude of chamber groups, including: Kappa Kappa Psi Brass Quintet, Kappa Kappa Psi Wind Quintet, Kappa Kappa Psi Trumpet Ensemble, IUP Trumpet Ensemble, and the IUP Legacy Brass Quintet.
Michael is a proud music educator, and he holds a private studio of trumpet and horn students. He runs a summer brass camp for students in grades 5-12 that allows students to continue their musical growth throughout the summer months. He is also currently the Assistant Band Director at Plum High School, where he works with the marching band and coaches chamber ensembles.
Jonathan Mozelewski is a trombonist for the Plum Brass Quintet. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh (2018), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the Swanson School of Engineering. During his time at Pitt, Jonathan was a member of the Pitt Band and participated in the pit orchestra for the musical Urinetown (along with trombonist Donna Mayo).
Jonathan joined the quintet in 2015 and is grateful to have been a part of its journey through many events and unique experiences. When not participating in the quintet, Jonathan is a project engineer for Schroeder Industries, a filtration company in Leetsdale, PA.
Donna has been with the Plum Brass Quintet since its inception back in 2013, when it was still the Plum High School Brass Quintet. She started playing trombone her junior year of high school to help fill out the low brass section after her older brother graduated. Though she often misses her origins as a saxophonist, she has never regretted the decision to switch to, what she refers to as, "the best instrument in the world." She would later become the drum major of her high school marching band and earn herself the Patrick S. Gilmore award for "outstanding contributions to the band."
After graduating from Plum, Donna attended the Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy (PSMT) and became a State Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). Having tried her hand (no pun intended) at massage in various healthcare practices, Donna settled into her current career as a self-employed LMT alongside some former classmates from PSMT. They own That Massage Place in Aspinwall, PA. Because of her alternative schooling choices, Donna did not have any music programs available to her. She is, therefore, forever indebted to her lifelong friend, Michael Buckstein, who gave her the amazing opportunity to perform year-after-year with the Plum Brass Quintet.
